There couldn’t be anyone out there who has never experienced back pain in their life. Could there? That pain where it feels that your muscles, nerves, bones, joints or any other spinal structure is giving out on you! 

What are the reasons behind Back Pain?

Under a certain age, you sit, stand, do hand stands badly, fall and roll over and never feel a thing, or almost. That is because the body starts out in life by being very flexible. Soon, very soon, and it can start in our teens, our lack of proper care for our bodies’ can start to show in Back Pain caused by:

  • Muscle strains, which are as a small tear in the muscle or ligament as a result of a sudden awkward movement or from heavy lifting.
  • All types of spinal discs, such as herniated, slip etc.
  • Osteoporosis, arthritis and other joint and spinal painful conditions

The main factors that lead to any of the above reasons occurring are:

  • Age
  • Stress, anxiety and depression
  • Being overweight
  • Strenuous physical activity without the correct preparation of muscles
  • Pregnancy
  • Smoking
  • Being a couch potato or as near to one as possible
  • Being female, apparently more susceptible to back pain than men

How can you prevent potential Back Pain?

The most important thing to remember is that stretching warms your muscles and makes them limber. So stretch before getting out of bed, when sitting for a long time, when exercising, in the bathroom, the kitchen at the office etc. anywhere and everywhere you are, remember to stretch and:

  • Sleep on a firm mattress
  • Lift things correctly, by bending down at the knees and keeping your back straight
  • Sit and stand correctly, with your shoulders back and your chest lifted. When sitting for too long, support your back and get up and stretch every now and them
  • Exercise and undergo physiotherapy, both of which increase strength and flexibility

How can Physiotherapy treat Back Pain?

First there are two types of pain. Acute Pain, which lasts for a little while, could be a day, a couple of weeks or months, and then it goes away forever when cured. And Chronic Pain, which lasts for a long time, more than three months, or goes away and comes back often.

Both types, but especially Acute Back Pain, can cure themselves over time, with a bit of rest and attention, maybe even an over the counter pain and inflammation medication.
However, it has been proven that Physiotherapy can also be used as a curative and preventive treatment.

Physiotherapy uses manual massages, heat and ice application, electro-simulation and other spinal mobilization and manipulation techniques to improve muscle strength and flexibility as well as give correct routine posture advice.

How do you prevent Back Pain?        

Lifting:

With your feet shoulder-width apart, bend your hips and knees keeping your back as straight as possible Your head UP, grip the load firmly and hold it close to your body, tighten your stomach muscles and use the strong muscles of your legs as you lift the object. Keep your back straight and avoid twisting, point your feet in the direction you want to go.
